Toast the end of food waste with this award-winning, social beer.

One-third of all food is wasted. That’s 1.3 billion tonnes wasted globally every year – 15 million tonnes in the UK.

We recently saw statistics showing that if global food waste was a country, it would be the 3rd largest greenhouse gas emitter on the planet, behind China and the USA.

In the UK, bread is top of the list of our most wasted household food items, with almost 900,000 tonnes of bread wasted every year. That’s around 24 million slices every day!

Toast, a beer company that brews their beers with bread, is on a mission to end this waste.

Their award-winning beer is brewed with unsold loaves from bakeries and unused crusts from sandwich makers.

So far, they have saved 12,311 kilograms of bread, and have brewed 131,809 litres of beer.

Not only are Toast using bread that would otherwise be wasted, they give 100% of profits to Feedback, an environmental charity campaigning to end food waste.

So by enjoying Toast, you’re helping in more ways than one!

Feedback aims to halve food waste by 2025, and Toast forecast that they will donate over £3.6m to food waste organisations by 2020.

A socially-conscious beer company that is working to help end food waste is a fantastic reason to pick up one of their beers, but what does it taste like?

We tried their Purebread Pale Ale (which we bought from Waitrose).

It’s described online as:

Purebread is a fully flavoured Pale Ale brewed with surplus bread, malted barley, hops and yeast. It has clear hop aroma from Cascade and Chinook hops, and moderate bitterness and body that results in a well-balanced beer. Some fruity notes.

Our verdict: A very drinkable beer! It was a bit sweeter than we’d expected. Enjoyable, and would definitely recommend it.
