26 charities work together to create a debt free London.
London is one of the world’s most expensive cities to live in and work. There are over 1.3 million adults who are struggling to make ends meet across the city, and being in debt is a growing problem.
Debt Free London, previously known as Capitalise, are keen to help as many people in debt in London as possible. So far, their expert advisers have supported over 250,000 Londoners.
In the last year, Debt Free London’s advisers have seen a sharp rise in the number of people going to it for help with ‘priority’ debts such as council tax and rent arrears.
A third of people supported by the charity partnership, which is made up of 26 debt charities, are behind on their council tax. Debt Free London can also help with ‘non-priority’ debts including credit and store-cards.
“Debt is not only one of Londoners biggest problems, causing misery for hundreds of thousands, there is a stigma around debt which means many people are reluctant to find help, or can’t find it at all,” said Matt Dronfield, Head of the Debt Free London partnership. “This change of brand to Debt Free London and our new advertising campaign will make it much easier for Londoners to find help and show them that they are not alone with their debt worries, and that help is readily at hand.”
Debt Free London’s service is completely free. Anyone in London with worries about debt can call free on 0808 164 2480 for a brief assessment to establish the nature and urgency of the debt. If required, Debt Free London will then arrange a face-to-face appointment or a telephone advice session. Those worried about debt can also contact Debt Free London via its website.
